One of the most recognized coin designs in U.S. circulation is the portrait of President George Washington on the Quarter. First introduced in 1932, this image has remained on the coin’s obverse ever since, making it the longest-running design on any U.S. circulating coin. Right now, 90% Silver Washington Quarters are available to buy online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Originally, George Washington was not meant to appear on the Quarter. A congressional committee formed in 1924 to help organize a 1932 bicentennial celebration for Washington’s birth had planned to use his image on the half dollar for that year only. At the time, the Walking Liberty design was featured on the half dollar.
However, that idea changed. Instead of a one-time commemorative issue, Congress decided to place Washington on the quarter permanently, replacing the Standing Liberty design. That design was discontinued in 1930, no quarters were struck in 1931, and the Washington design debuted in 1932.
Each 90% Silver Washington Quarter listing from BullionMax includes a full canvas bag of 400 quarters, totaling $100 (USD) in face value. The coins come from circulation and were struck between 1932 and 1964, the final year the U.S. Mint produced quarters with 90% silver content for general use.
The obverse side of each Silver Washington Quarter features the familiar left-profile portrait of President George Washington. This design was created by John Flanagan in 1932 and was influenced by earlier sculpted works of Washington completed in the late 1700s.
On the reverse of these quarters, you’ll find the bald eagle that appears on the national seal. The eagle is shown facing forward with its head turned to the left. It clutches arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right, symbolizing readiness for war and a preference for peace.
