The 6th Tudor Beast – The Queen’s Panther

The Royal Mint’s Tudor Beasts Series reaches its sixth release, celebrating the union of King Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. Married in 1536, shortly after Anne Boleyn’s death, their relationship offered a more traditional dynamic. Jane Seymour’s quiet demeanor and fulfillment of Henry’s wish for a male heir, Prince Edward, made her a defining figure in his reign. Edward would later become King Edward VI.

The Queen’s Panther

The reverse design shows a seated panther supporting a shield with the combined arms of King Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. This symbol of their union represents both the monarchy and the Seymour family’s role in Tudor history.

The heraldic panther, though lesser-known than other Tudor symbols, was often depicted “incensed” with flames emerging from its mouth and ears. This striking imagery, derived from medieval bestiaries, associated the panther with grace, nobility, and strength. Its role in Tudor heraldry highlights the monarchy’s connection to tradition and power.

The shield merges Henry VIII’s traditional arms, which include the lions of England and fleurs-de-lis of France, with Jane Seymour’s coat of arms. The Seymour design, featuring golden wings on a red field, symbolized the family’s roots in Normandy and prominence in England.
