The Buffalo Nickel remains one of the best-known designs ever used on an American coin. As the first widely circulated US coin to prominently feature an Indigenous American portrait, it has become a lasting symbol in American numismatics. Its classic artwork continues to influence many modern bullion products, including privately produced copper rounds. Today, you can purchase 5 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Copper Rounds online from BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
These 5 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Copper Rounds are packaged in individual flips and are produced in the United States by SilverTowne Mint. Each piece faithfully recreates the classic Buffalo Nickel artwork introduced in 1913 by renowned sculptor James Earle Fraser.
On the obverse of the SilverTowne Buffalo Copper Round is a right-facing portrait of an Indigenous American inspired by Fraser’s original Buffalo Nickel design. The inscription “Liberty” appears just beyond the facial profile, while the familiar SilverTowne pickaxe mint mark is located near the lower end of the braid along the right side of the portrait.
The reverse of the 5 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Copper Round features the American bison, the largest land mammal native to North America. The bison served as an important source of food, clothing, and materials for many Indigenous communities throughout the Great Plains. This design shows the animal standing in left-profile relief on a raised mound, closely following the appearance of the original Buffalo Nickel.
When creating the Buffalo Nickel, James Earle Fraser based the Native American portrait on the combined features of three respected chiefs who posed for him: Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree. Fraser believed this blended portrait better represented Indigenous America than a single individual could. The reverse image was modeled after Black Diamond, a well-known bison from the Central Park Zoo whose powerful appearance Fraser carefully recreated in his design.
