The Aztec Sun Stone was created around 1479 CE during the rule of Emperor Axayácatl. Skilled artisans shaped the massive stone using traditional carving tools, producing one of the most detailed and meaningful monuments of the pre-Columbian era. Rather than serving only as a calendar, the monument represents the Aztec understanding of time, creation, and the relationship between humanity and the sun god Tonatiuh, whose commanding image occupies the center of the design.

At the center is Tonatiuh, the Aztec sun god, shown with an extended tongue in the shape of a sacrificial blade. Four rectangular panels surrounding the central portrait represent previous world eras. Beyond these are the twenty named days of the Aztec calendar, followed by additional circular bands displaying jade and turquoise-inspired patterns, celestial symbols, and radiant sun imagery. Around the outer border, two fire serpents wrap around the entire composition.
