The Aztec Sun Stone was rediscovered on December 17, 1790, during excavation work in Mexico City’s central plaza, the Zócalo. This project, ordered by Viceroy Juan Vicente de Güemes, uncovered the massive basalt disk just below the surface. News of the find spread quickly, drawing attention from scholars and historians. Its discovery came at a time when interest in Mexico’s pre-Columbian past was growing, helping to spark further research and appreciation for Aztec history.
The obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Copper Round displays the detailed design of the Sun Stone. Originally carved from a single slab of basalt, the piece reflects the Aztec view of time and the universe. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, shown with a blade-shaped tongue. Surrounding him are four panels representing earlier world eras. Beyond these are the twenty day signs of the Aztec calendar, followed by additional decorative rings with symbols, patterns, and sun rays. The outer edge is framed by two fire serpents that enclose the entire design.
On the reverse of the 1 oz Aztec Calendar Copper Round, you will find a right-facing portrait of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was its final tlatoani, as well as a relative of Moctezuma II. During the Spanish conquest led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc directed the defense of Tenochtitlan. Despite strong resistance, the city eventually fell. He was captured in 1521 and later executed by Spanish forces in 1525.
