The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is the country’s only producer of silver coins and other precious metals used as currency. The mint operates a state-of-the-art silver and gold refinery to produce a variety of products for both collectors and investors. The RCM is owned in a trust for the Crown of Canada as a Crown corporation.
Canada’s first mint was opened in 1908 when the first domestically-produced coin was struck in the country. From 1858 to 1908, Canada’s coinage was produced by the Royal Mint of London. With its new capabilities, Canada quickly produced much of the coinage needed in the country, all under the auspices of the Royal Mint of London.
Several decades later, Canada broke from its British partners and solidified its plans for a mint of its own. In 1931 the Royal Canadian Mint was officially established by the Canadian Parliament to be housed under the country’s Department of Finance. At the time, the RCM produced gold and silver bullion, coins, and bars. It wasn’t long before the mint was producing all coins necessary for all of Canada, making it fully self-sustainable, and no longer needing any support from outside facilities.
The next major milestone for the RCM came in 1969 with the passing of the Royal Canadian Mint Act. In doing so, the mint was designated as a Crown Corporation and directed to report to Canadian Parliament on all its business dealings.
Today, the mint operates much like a business even though it is owned by the Government of Canada. The RCM has its own management structure and even a board of directors to which it reports.
The RCM has a long and storied history of producing some of the finest silver in the world. Royal Canadian Mint silver comes in many forms, including:
Circulation coins – The RCM’s Winnipeg facility mints over 1 billion circulating coins each year, with many of these being made of silver. Sometimes the mint produces limited edition circulating coins, like the 2010 Vancouver Olympic mascot coins.
Circulation coins – The RCM’s Winnipeg facility mints over 1 billion circulating coins each year, with many of these being made of silver. Sometimes the mint produces limited edition circulating coins, like the 2010 Vancouver Olympic mascot coins.
Collector coins – These limited-edition silver coins honor Canada’s landscapes, national achievements, and major national themes. The actual value of collector coins is often much higher than their face value.
Gift souvenirs – Silver souvenirs from the Royal Canadian Mint make for great gifts. These include timepieces, commemorative medallions, silver coin sets, and jewelry.
Bullion coins – This includes the highly coveted Silver Maple Leaf coin, a highly sought-after bullion investment coin that comes in several varieties. There are a variety of other bullion coins like the Birds of Prey and Predator series coins, produced by the mint as well.
Bullion bars – The RCM produces high-quality silver bullion bars, up to a purity of 0.9999.
Silver proofs – Proof coins come with a variety of collectible images like the 100th Anniversary of WWI, all while maintaining high quality and 0.9999 purity.
Over the years, the Royal Canadian Mint has adapted to changing technologies in the minting process. By leveraging these new innovations, the RCM has ensured the security and longevity of its silver coins. This is especially true for the Silver Maple Leaf coin which remains one of the mint’s most coveted pieces.
MINTSHIELD Surface Protection – Reduces the occurrence of white spots on Silver Maple Leaf bullion coins.
Bullion DNA – An anti-counterfeiting technology to digitally authenticate Silver Maple Leaf coins. This adds validation to the buying process to ensure the coins are authentic.
Anti-counterfeiting features – Lasers help to micro-engrave radial lines on both sides of the Silver Maple Leaf coin, making it one of the most detailed coins in the world.
In recent years, the RCM has been recognized as a producer of some of the most unique and high-quality silver on the market. These awards have been given to the Royal Canadian Mint for its outstanding work in silver production.
