The history of the Czech lion goes back to the 1100s, when Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa granted a new coat of arms to King Vladislaus II. The original design featured a silver lion on a red background to represent courage and strength, and it was initially shown with a single tail. Tradition holds that a second tail was later added as a reward for King Přemysl Otakar I’s support in battles against the Saxons. By the mid-13th century, the two-tailed lion had become the official symbol of the Kingdom of Bohemia and continues to represent Czech heritage today.

The obverse of the 2026 Niue Czech Lion Silver Coin displays a portrait of King Charles III. As Niue is part of the Commonwealth, its coinage features the reigning British monarch.
