Celebrate a major milestone in Australia’s early currency history with the 2025 1 oz Silver 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin. This special release from the Perth Mint marks 225 years since Governor Philip Gidley King issued the colony’s first official rules on money in 1800. Inspired by the famous Spanish Pillar Dollar, this 1 oz silver coin commemorates a key document that helped shape Australia’s financial foundation. The 2025 1 oz Australian Silver 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin is now available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Governor King’s proclamation was an early example of practical economics. To keep coins in the colony, he gave higher-than-usual values to certain foreign coins, especially the Spanish dollar, which he set at five shillings. This move helped tackle the colony’s coin shortage by discouraging the outflow of money with departing ships and traders.
Each 2025 1 oz Australian Silver 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and packaged in an individual plastic flip. The reverse of the coin revisits the design of the Spanish Pillar Dollar, which was widely used and played a major role in the colony’s early economy.
The obverse of the coin features the first official Australian coin portrait of King Charles III. Created by artist Dan Thorne, the left-facing image shows the King without a crown, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Australian numismatics.
On the reverse, the coin displays the design and markings from the historic Spanish Pillar Dollar—also known as the “piece of eight.” This includes imagery and engravings true to the originals, such as the Mo mint mark for Mexico City, a major minting location for these historic coins.
