The Morgan Silver Dollar was originally introduced in 1876, following a brief break in the minting of silver dollars in the United States. It replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar and was produced from 1878 to 1904, with a one-year return in 1921. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, the coin reflects his work on both sides of the design. Morgan joined the US Mint as an engraver in 1878 and was appointed Chief Engraver in 1917, a position he held until 1925.

Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of the 2023 Morgan Dollar in left-profile relief. She wears a Phrygian cap, a coronet marked with “Liberty,” and a laurel wreath—symbols traditionally representing freedom and honor.

On the reverse, Morgan’s heraldic eagle design is revived. It shows a bald eagle with wings outstretched, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Unlike other eagle depictions, this one does not include a national shield, offering a slightly different interpretation of this familiar symbol.
