The British Silver Britannia took a major step in 2023 as The Royal Mint moved from its final portraits of Queen Elizabeth II to the new image of King Charles III. This change marked the first time in the series that a monarch other than Elizabeth II appears on the coins. Right now, 2023 1/4 oz British Silver Britannia Coins featuring the debut effigy of King Charles III are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2023 1/4 oz British Silver Britannia Coin ships in a protective plastic flip. Early in 2023, The Royal Mint struck a limited run with Queen Elizabeth II’s final portrait. After Her Majesty’s passing in September 2022, the Mint prepared a new design for King Charles III, resulting in a small number of 2023 coins with the Queen’s image before production moved to the new effigy.
Britannia’s classic imagery blends Roman motifs with British identity, using each element to suggest stability and resolve. The Corinthian helmet points to classical wisdom and defense, the shield—often bearing the Union Jack—speaks to unity and protection, and the trident, borrowed from Neptune, underscores Britain’s connection to the sea and long maritime tradition.
The obverse of the 2023 British Silver Britannia Coin presents a left-facing portrait of King Charles III. In keeping with tradition for male monarchs, the portrait does not include a crown. The design is the work of Martin Jennings.
On the reverse, the 2023 1/4 oz Silver Britannia Coin displays Philip Nathan’s 1987 depiction of Britannia. She stands with a trident in one hand and a Union Jack shield in the other, wearing a Corinthian helmet—a straightforward nod to strength and Britain’s seafaring heritage.
