The Britannia 2022 1 oz gold coin is minted in the United Kingdom at the Royal Mint and contains one troy ounce of gold, minted in 0.9999 pure metal. This coin features more than exceptional purity – it has top-notch security features, too. These include microscopic text, a latent image, and incredibly complex visuals, which make it much more visually interesting as well as incredibly secure and hard to counterfeit.
The obverse side of this coin showcases a recent portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark. Jody Clark's initials are engraved below the portrait, and the obverse edge is encircled by text reading "Elizabeth II D.G. REG F D 100 Pounds." These cryptic letters are an abbreviation of the Latin phrase, Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensor, or “By the grace of God, Queen, and defender of the faith.”
To honor the 1816 adoption of the gold standard, The Royal Mint created this series of gold bullion coins in two weights (1 oz and 1/4 oz) in 2016 with plans for annual releases of both weights. Around the edge, the coin’s face value of £100, “Elizabeth II” and the Latin abbreviation D.G. Reg. F.D. (translation: by the grace of God, Queen and defender of the faith). The Queen’s portrait is surrounded by a highly-detailed guilloche pattern, designed to dissuade any attempts to counterfeit the coin.
This 1 oz gold Britannia bar displays the true brilliance of Britain’s mythological protector in all her glory. Minted by the Royal Mint, each bar contains one troy ounce of gold, 0.9999 pure, accompanied by its own, unique assay card substantiating its authenticity and purity. Its design is wholly unique, as well. Jody Clark’s depiction of Britannia shows her customary Corinthian armor and helm, trident in one hand and her Union Jack shield in the other. She faces east over a background of waves, representing Britain’s historic naval dominance.
On the reverse side, The British Royal Mint’s seal is engraved atop the same waves from the obverse. On this side, the bar is also marked with its specifications: 1 oz, 999.9 fine gold, and its serial code starting with “RM” for Royal Mint. Along the bottom runs cresting waves in clear relief, yet another reminder of Britain’s naval heritage.
