Product Details

Few historical designs are as widely recognized or deeply symbolic as the Aztec Sun Stone. Its use on precious metal rounds continues to attract collectors who enjoy ancient history, meaningful imagery, and the legacy of Mesoamerican civilizations. Available in silver, gold, and copper, these rounds present a detailed interpretation of the original carved stone. Each piece offers both a way to own precious metals and a connection to one of the most important cultures of the ancient Americas. Today, 2 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are available at BullionMax.

Round Highlights:

  • Comes with an individual flip!
  • Includes a detailed depiction of the Aztec Calendar Stone!
  • Made in the United States!
  • Issued by SilverTowne Mint!
  • Contains 2 troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • On the obverse is the Aztec Calendar Stone.
  • The reverse features the image of Cuauhtemoc.

The true purpose of the Aztec Sun Stone has been studied and debated for many years. While it is often described as a calendar due to its detailed time-related imagery, most experts now believe it had a broader and more ceremonial role. It is widely understood today as a monument tied to Aztec beliefs about the universe, especially the idea of the fifth sun, which represents the current age. The stone also reflects the relationship between humanity and Tonatiuh, the sun god, which was central to Aztec spiritual life.

Each 2 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round offered here is packaged in a protective flip. This 2 oz option is among the larger sizes available in the series. In addition to this round, the collection also includes smaller silver rounds, a copper version, and silver bars, all featuring the same iconic Sun Stone design.

The obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round showcases the detailed artwork of the Sun Stone. Originally carved from a large piece of basalt, the design reflects both artistic skill and religious meaning. At the center is Tonatiuh, shown with a blade-shaped tongue that represents ritual sacrifice. Surrounding him are four sections that symbolize earlier world ages in Aztec belief. Beyond that is a ring displaying the twenty named days of their ritual calendar. The outer areas include decorative symbols, celestial patterns, and solar elements, all bordered by two fire serpents that frame the design.

On the reverse of the 2 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round is a profile image of Emperor Cuauhtemoc facing right. He became ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was the last tlatoani, as well as a relative of Moctezuma II. During the Spanish conquest led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc organized the defense of Tenochtitlan. Despite his efforts, the city eventually fell. He was captured in 1521 and later executed by the Spanish in 1525.
