The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most recognized coins in American numismatics, combining 90% silver content with a timeless design that has attracted collectors for generations. The 1878 issue is especially important because it reflects the Mint’s early redesign of the reverse, changing from eight tail feathers to seven while also introducing several design features that would later become standard in 1879. Right now, 1878 7TF-P Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available from BullionMax in certified condition.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1878 7TF Morgan Silver Dollar available here has been graded Mint State 63 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Coins at this grade offer pleasing overall eye appeal with only modest interruptions to their original mint luster. Expect numerous small contact marks along with a handful of larger marks. This variety combines the updated seven-tail-feather reverse with rounded eagle breast details and slanted arrow feathers that would become standard on the 1879 reverse.
The 1878 7 Tail Feathers Morgan Dollar ranks among the most desirable varieties in the Morgan Dollar collection. Produced during the first year of the series, it reflects the United States Mint’s decision to revise the reverse design after production had already begun. The switch from eight tail feathers to seven created one of the most recognizable first-year varieties in American coin collecting and remains a favorite with collectors today.
The obverse of the 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar displays George T. Morgan’s portrait of Liberty facing left. Inspired by Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap and a coronet bearing the word LIBERTY. The design combines classical influences with an American style that has made it one of the most admired portraits ever used on United States coinage.
The reverse of the 1878 Morgan Dollar features the familiar heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide while holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. A radiant arrangement of rays appears above the eagle, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR frame the design and complete this enduring reverse.
