Product Details

One of the most popular silver coins in the world, the silver American Eagle 1-oz coin was first minted in 1986 alongside its gold counterpart. Like the gold American eagle, this is one of the few IRA-eligible coins available for precious metals investors. This specific Type 1 design was unchanged for 25 years, before being updated in 2021. All silver American eagles minted in 2022 and later will bear the new, Type 2 design.

Silver American eagle coins contain one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. And since this is a sovereign coin of the U.S. it is fully backed by the United States government. It carries a $1 face value. This bullion investment-grade coin’s relatively low premium over spot price makes it an ideal way to invest, collect, or store silver. These are just as few of the reasons the Silver American Eagle is a favorite among investors as well as collectors.

The image on the obverse (front) of the Silver American Eagle was created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916 for the then-50-cent piece. This Walking Liberty design shows Weinman’s take on the older Oscar Roty’s Sower design. It features the figure of Liberty striding, the wind billowing her robes. She carries branches of laurel and oak into the morning while the sun rises behind her.

The reverse (back) side of the coin features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This version is John Mercanti’s update of the very first U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, Robert Scot’s, original eagle created in the 18th century. The eagle clutches the famous olive branch and arrows in its talons, a shield, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in banners on each outspread wing. This side also shows 13 stars representing the original colonies.

This beautiful and classic piece of numismatic art makes for the ideal addition to a collection or as a gift, equally breathtaking though much less expensive than its golden counterpart.
