George T. Morgan, who would go on to become the seventh Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, created this design in 1876 with the help of Anna Willess Williams. A schoolteacher from Philadelphia, Williams served as the model for Morgan’s Liberty figure, which he envisioned as a uniquely American representation—different from earlier, classical interpretations.

On the obverse of the Sunshine Morgan Silver Bar, you’ll see the Liberty portrait from Morgan’s 1878 silver dollar design. Her profile faces left and is placed inside a circular emblem at the top.
