The Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most recognizable designs from the ancient world, and its use on bullion rounds continues to draw interest from collectors. Inspired by the original stone carving created by the Aztec civilization, these pieces highlight detailed artwork tied to history, astronomy, and cultural tradition. Struck in precious metals, Sun Stone rounds offer both visual appeal and a way to own a small piece of this historic design. Today, 1/4 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are available online at BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
These 1/4 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are part of a broader series of Calendar Stone products from SilverTowne. Along with this fractional option, the collection includes additional silver rounds in larger weights, as well as copper rounds and silver bars. Each 1/4 oz round is offered individually in a plastic flip or in tubes of 30 for those looking to purchase in larger quantities.
On the obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds, you’ll find a detailed image of the famous Sun Stone. The design is based on a massive basalt carving created by the Aztecs. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, shown with a blade-shaped tongue. Around him are symbols representing earlier world ages, followed by the 20 day signs of the Aztec calendar. Additional rings include decorative elements such as glyphs, rays, and serpent figures that frame the design.
The reverse of the 1/4 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds features a right-facing portrait of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was its final leader. As Spanish forces advanced under Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc led the defense of Tenochtitlan. Despite his efforts, the city fell, and he was later captured in 1521 and executed a few years afterward.
The original Aztec Calendar Stone remains an impressive achievement. Carved from a single block of basalt, it measures roughly 12 feet across and weighs about 25 tons. It combines elements of religion, timekeeping, and art into one structure, reflecting the skill and knowledge of the Aztec people.
