The sinking of the S.S. Tilawa was a tragic event during World War II, with many lives lost and survivors enduring a difficult time in lifeboats before being rescued. Along with this great human loss, more than 2,000 silver bullion bars were lost at sea when the ship went down. Today, that shipwrecked silver has been recovered and refined into collectible silver rounds and bars. Right now, 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Silver Rounds are available at BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
In 2017, a deep-sea recovery effort led to the retrieval of over 2,000 silver bars from the wreckage of the S.S. Tilawa. These bars, weighing in total about 61 tons, were recovered from the ocean floor. This successful salvage effort brought renewed interest in the ship’s history and the significant amount of silver it carried.
Each 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Silver Round offered here is made using this shipwrecked silver and comes in a protective plastic flip, tube of 20, or box of 800 rounds. These rounds are a unique piece of history, providing a chance to own silver that has been at the bottom of the ocean since 1942.
The obverse of the S.S. Tilawa Silver Round shows the ship from above as it sails through the Indian Ocean. The background includes a nautical chart of its final 1942 voyage from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Durban, South Africa, a journey that was tragically cut short.
On the reverse of 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Silver Round, you’ll find another detailed view of the S.S. Tilawa. This design captures the ship in the waters of the Indian Ocean, reflecting its final days during its ill-fated November 1942 voyage.
