The Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most recognizable and detailed designs from the ancient world. Its appearance on precious metal rounds has made it a favorite among collectors who appreciate history, symmetry, and the legacy of Mesoamerican culture. When struck in silver, these rounds highlight the fine details of the original carving. Many buyers see them as both a precious metal holding and a small tribute to one of the most advanced civilizations of its time. Right now, 1/2 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are available from BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
Each 1/2 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round available here is packaged individually in a protective flip or in multiples of 20 rounds within acrylic tubes. This piece is part of a larger Aztec Calendar collection that also includes additional silver round sizes, a copper version, and silver bars.
The Aztec Sun Stone was created during the rule of Emperor Axayácatl, with most historians placing its origin around 1479 CE. This was a time when the Aztec Empire was strong and focused on artistic achievement. Skilled craftsmen carved the stone using simple tools, yet still managed to produce a highly detailed and precise design. Every symbol and pattern was carefully shaped without modern equipment, making the finished work even more impressive.
On the obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round, the design closely reflects the original Sun Stone. The center features Tonatiuh, the sun god, shown with a blade-like tongue. Around him are four panels representing earlier ages in Aztec belief. Beyond these are the 20 day symbols of the ritual calendar, followed by rings filled with decorative patterns and symbols tied to the cosmos. The outer edge is completed by two fire serpents that frame the entire design.
The reverse of the 1/2 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round shows a right-facing portrait of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became ruler in 1520 and was the final leader of the Aztec Empire. As the Spanish forces advanced under Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc led the defense of Tenochtitlan. Although the city eventually fell in 1521, he remained an important figure in Aztec history. He was later captured and executed in 1525.
