The Britannia series debuted in 1987 with a gold coin release, created as Britain’s answer to other major bullion programs like the Gold Krugerrand, American Eagle, and Canadian Maple Leaf. The silver Britannia coin followed in 1997, with the platinum version introduced in 2018 to expand the series’ offerings.
On the obverse of these 1 oz Platinum Britannia Coins, you’ll find an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. This portrait features Her Late Majesty wearing the George IV State Diadem, with inscriptions of “Elizabeth II,” “D G REG F D,” and the face value of “100 Pounds.”
The reverse side of the British Platinum Britannia displays the timeless image of Britannia, standing strong with her trident and shield. Dressed in flowing robes and a helmet, Britannia is surrounded by an anti-counterfeit radial pattern, with inscriptions of the coin’s key details along the rim.
