The Pre-33 Gold Quarter Eagle was the smallest denomination in the US Eagle Series and one of the smallest gold coins ever issued by the United States Mint. The last design used in the $2.50 Quarter Eagle series was the Indian Quarter Eagle, notable for being the nation’s first incuse-struck coin. Today, Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle Coins in AU58 condition are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Indian Quarter Eagle was issued in thirteen different years, with a total of 15 circulation strikes. Only two years, 1911 and 1914, saw production at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. Among these issue years, 1925 was unique as it was the only time the Denver Mint solely produced the coins, with no Philadelphia Mint strikes that year.
Each Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle in this listing is in About Uncirculated 58 condition, the highest rating within the AU range (50-58 on the Sheldon Scale). AU58 coins, often referred to as “sliders,” have minimal signs of wear, mostly on the highest points of relief, and retain much of their original mint luster. While we cannot guarantee a specific year of issue, if you purchase multiple coins, you may receive ones with the same year.
The obverse of the Indian Gold Quarter Eagle features a left-facing portrait of an indigenous figure. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this portrait also appeared on the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle. The figure is adorned with a traditional feathered headdress, giving the design a bold, distinctive appearance.
On the reverse of the $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle, an American bald eagle is shown perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch wrapped around it. This design, also by Pratt, was used for both the Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle in this series.
