Product Details

The 1 Nevada Goldback is the newest and most exciting way to acquire real, physical gold in a form that’s convenient for everyday use. Every Goldback is denominated in 1/1000th troy oz of gold (so this 1 Goldback has one milli-ounce, or 1/1000th troy oz, of physical gold at its core). The Goldback is created by vacuum-depositing a precisely-measured quantity of atomized gold particles onto a thin, decorated sheet of polymer. The resulting note is then sealed by a second protective polymer barrier. The result is a surprisingly tough and durable note, almost paper-thin, containing a precisely-measured quantity of physical, 0.9999 fine gold.

Every 1 Nevada Goldback is more than just a distinctive form of gold – it’s probably the most barter-friendly form of gold we’ve ever seen. Note this is not a form of “legal tender” and has no official standing as a national currency (don’t even try to pay your tax bill with these!). Rather, they’re “experimental sound money project within the states that authorize its use as such,” according to the inventors. Goldbacks are suitable for barter anywhere, though, and probably readily accepted by vendors who are as enthusiastic about sound money as we are!

All in all, we couldn’t be more thrilled to offer the first-ever real gold-backed note in history to BullionMax shoppers. Take note, though (and forgive the pun) – Goldbacks sell out fast! So if you want to complete your collection, act in haste or repent in leisure…

A closer look at the 1 Nevada Goldback note

1 Goldback Denomination’s Nevada design features the virtue Caritas. And awful lot of thought went into the design! Here’s an explanation from the Goldback’s creators:

Caritas, or Charity, is the Virtue beautifully featured on Nevada’s 1 Goldback denomination. This is her first appearance on a Goldback design, and is notably patterned after a depiction of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Austin, Nevada. Catholicism is Nevada’s most dominant religion and St. Augustine’s is the oldest Catholic church in the state. Like all Goldback designs, the art contains many levels of symbolism. Some major symbols of Charity featured include: the Sierra Nevada lily, which is in the container below Mary’s feet to the right; the Mary Magdalene rose, in the container on the left; cherubs crowning Mary and Burning Hearts to either side of her; Charity’s lit candle in her hand, and Nevada’s sun, rising over the mountains seen through the window behind her.

The window, the candlestick in the right corner of the window sill and the columns on each side of the design, are each inspired from St. Mary of the Mountains Catholic cathedral in Virginia City, (now, Saint Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church & Museum), which was also an inspiration for this artwork. The window below Mary’s dress hides the word “Love,” the symbol of a square, a compass, a wagon wheel, and rosary beads.  The viewer will also note the ash tree, symbolizing marriage and Las Vegas’s status as the marriage capital of the world; and a family of ring-necked pheasants, which showcase the selfless acts of nurture and protecting their family and young.

What is a Goldback?

We love gold coins, but when it comes to spending them, well, problems arise. Considering that the smallest typical gold coin (a 1/10 oz American gold eagle) costs $250-$300, how can you buy a candy bar? Do you have to spend a whole 1/10 oz eagle and take your change in paper dollars? (If you paid in gold, should you even want your change in paper dollars?)

Fortunately, some very smart folks saw the challenges that prevent wider adoption of actually using physical gold for everyday transactions, and they solved it by inventing the Goldback.

Here’s what its inventors have to say about it:

The Goldback® is the world’s first physical, interchangeable, gold money, that is designed to accommodate even small transactions.
