Introducing the British Gold Sovereign, a timeless piece first minted by the Royal Mint in 1489 during the reign of King Henry VII. With an initial face value of 21 Shillings, these gold coins were initially deemed too precious for everyday circulation. Since 1817, the Royal Mint has consistently produced gold sovereigns featuring the reigning monarch of the time. Currently, you can acquire Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins from the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
All the Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins presented here boast the Young Head design of Queen Victoria I, initially minted by the Royal Mint from 1837 to 1887. Each coin is carefully packaged in protective plastic.
Despite Queen Victoria I’s reign lasting from 1837 to 1901, a singular design dominated much of her rule. The Young Head bust captures a youthful and elegant Victoria I without a crown, featuring her hair pinned up at the back in a left-profile portrait. This particular design graced the Great Britain Gold Sovereign from 1837 to 1887.
Notably, there are variations in the reverse of Great Britain Gold Sovereigns during Queen Victoria I’s reign. From 1837 to 1871, the coin’s reverse showcased a crowned heraldic shield, quartered with the three lions of England and the standing lion of Scotland. The harp of Ireland also found its place in the lower-left quadrant.
In 1871, the Royal Mint reintroduced the original St. George and the dragon design for the reverse of the Great Britain Gold Sovereign. From 1871 to 1887, these gold sovereigns featured the Young Head Victoria I design on the obverse and the St. George design on the reverse. Remarkably, the Royal Mint simultaneously minted both the crowned shield and St. George design from 1871 to 1887, making it the only period when two distinct gold sovereigns were struck concurrently.
