Gold coins have played a significant role in world history, with many nations issuing them once they adopted the gold standard. Among the most famous from South America is the Colombian Gold Peso series. The 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin became one of the most popular denominations in this series. Right now, 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins are available to purchase online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin available in this listing comes with a protective plastic flip. This is a random year, varied condition product. Your coins will be selected by BullionMax once your payment is processed. We cannot guarantee a specific date, design, or condition. The coins you receive may range from Brilliant Uncirculated to those showing moderate to heavy signs of wear, as they were common circulation coins.
The 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin was first issued in 1880 when Colombia adopted the gold standard. These coins were made to match the British Gold Sovereign in both gold content and weight, with .2355 Troy oz of 22-karat gold, or 91.67% gold content per coin. From 1907 to 1931, these coins were pegged to the British Pound at a rate of 1 Pound sterling to 5 Pesos. After Britain left the gold standard, the Colombian Peso was tied to the US dollar, which remained gold-backed until 1933.
On the obverse side of the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin, you may find one of two designs. Some coins feature a man kneeling and chiseling rock, while others, particularly those from 1918 to 1928, depict a bust of Simon Bolivar, a key figure in South American independence and the founder of Colombia. The Bolivar design was introduced in 1918 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his victory in Colombia’s war for independence. Both designs include the inscription “Republica Colombia” at the top, with the date at the bottom.
The reverse of all 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins shows the Colombian coat of arms, with the denomination above the design.
