The Gold Sovereign has a long history at The Perth Mint. That connection began in 1899 when the Western Australian branch of the Royal Mint started striking Sovereigns to support the growing economy fueled by Australia’s major gold rushes. This 2026 Proof Australian Gold Quarter Sovereign includes a special 100 privy mark celebrating the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II in 2026. Today, 2026 Proof Australian Gold Perth Mint Sovereign Coins are available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each of these 2026 Proof Australian Gold Sovereign Coins comes housed in a black presentation case featuring the St. George design on the lid. The case is delivered inside a themed outer shipper and includes a Certificate of Authenticity. The proof finish showcases frosted design details contrasted by highly reflective mirrored fields. Just 1,500 coins are available in this presentation format. Struck in 22-karat gold, each coin contains 91.67% pure gold.
The obverse of the 2026 Proof Gold Sovereign Coin features the Perth Mint’s first official portrait of King Charles III. The monarch is shown in left-profile relief and is depicted without a crown. Designed by Dan Thorne, this effigy first appeared on Australian coinage in 2024.
On the reverse of the 2026 Proof Australian Gold Sovereign is Jennifer McKenna’s modern take on Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous St. George and the Dragon design. St. George is shown riding horseback without armor as the horse rises up while facing a winged dragon. The reverse also includes the special 100 privy mark recognizing the 100th anniversary of the birth of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2026.
Australia’s association with the Gold Sovereign dates back to the gold rush era of the 1800s. Major gold discoveries in Victoria and New South Wales created a need for local coin production while also providing abundant gold supplies. The Perth Mint continued producing Sovereigns until 1931, when Australia left the gold standard. Coins struck at Perth carry the distinctive P mint mark and remain popular among collectors interested in Australia’s numismatic heritage.
