The Czech Mint launched its first bullion series in 2017 with the Silver Czech Lion, a collection that quickly became known for its national symbolism and limited mintages. Struck by the Czech Mint and issued as legal tender by Niue, each annual release introduces a refreshed depiction of the Czech lion on the reverse. This well-known emblem reflects an important part of Czech heritage. Right now, 2026 1 oz Niue Czech Lion Gold Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Czech lion dates back to the 12th century, when Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa granted new heraldic arms to King Vladislaus II. The original design showed a silver lion on a red background, symbolizing strength and courage, and featured a single tail. Tradition holds that a second tail was later added to honor King Přemysl Otakar I for his support during regional conflicts. By the mid-13th century, the two-tailed lion had become the official emblem of the Kingdom of Bohemia and has remained a lasting symbol of Czech identity ever since.
All 2026 1 oz Niue Czech Lion Gold Coins in this listing are packaged individually in protective flips and arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. This release marks the 10th issue in the series and introduces a new reverse design featuring the Czech Lion alongside the Crown of St. Wenceslas.
On the obverse of the 2026 Niue Czech Lion Gold Coin, you will find a portrait of King Charles III. Niue, as part of the Commonwealth, includes the reigning British monarch on its coinage. This left-facing image of Charles III was designed by Jody Clark, who also created the final circulating portrait of Queen Elizabeth II used on British coins.
The reverse of the 2026 1 oz Czech Lion Gold Coin showcases the Czech lion with its distinct forked tail, positioned beside the Crown of St. Wenceslas. This historic crown was created in 1346 by Charles IV for his coronation as King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. He dedicated it to St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech lands, and established it as the official crown for future royal coronations.
