The 1800 Australian Proclamation, issued by Governor Philip Gidley King, marked a key moment in Australia’s early colonial history by introducing the first official set of currency rules. To celebrate the 225th anniversary of this important event, the Perth Mint has released special 1 oz gold and silver coins. Today, you can get the 2025 1 oz Australian Gold 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2025 1 oz Australian Gold 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and comes safely housed in a protective flip. The reverse design reflects the Spanish coinage that was modified in 1800 to create the first official currency used in colonial Australia.
Before this proclamation, New South Wales had no consistent monetary system. A wide mix of foreign coins circulated at inconsistent values, causing confusion and instability. Governor King’s decree helped to organize this system by assigning fixed values to coins from nations such as Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, and India. This formed the basis of Australia’s first structured currency system.
The obverse of the 2025 Australian Gold 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin showcases a portrait of King Charles III. This left-profile image, created by artist Dan Thorne, presents the monarch without a crown and is the first official effigy of His Majesty to appear on Australian coins.
On the reverse of the coin, you’ll find design elements inspired by the Spanish Pillar Dollar. Often referred to as the “piece of eight” or “real de a ocho,” this coin was widely used across the globe from the 1500s through the 1800s. Minted using silver from Spanish colonies in the Americas, the original Pillar Dollar featured two vertical columns symbolizing the Pillars of Hercules. These classic visuals have been faithfully recreated on this commemorative issue.
