James Earle Fraser designed the original Buffalo Nickel that inspired the Gold Buffalo series. He was a major figure in American coin art, also designing medals such as the Victory medal for WWI veterans and the Navy Cross. Fraser’s approach to coin design drew heavily from real American stories and landscapes, including the frontier life he saw growing up. His work combined strong national themes with a fine-art touch that made his designs stand out.
