In Chinese culture, dragons are known for their unique look and important meaning. Unlike Western dragons, which are often winged and fierce, Chinese dragons (lóng) have snake-like bodies, four legs, and features from different animals. The Royal Canadian Mint honors this legendary creature in its Canadian Dragon Series. Right now, you can find the 2020 1/4 oz Canadian Dragon Gold Coin available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2020 1/4 oz Canadian Dragon Gold Coin is packaged in protective plastic. The coin’s reverse-proof finish gives the dragon design a mirror-like look, set against a frosted background. This coin is part of a series from the Royal Canadian Mint that ran from 2017 to 2023.
Chinese dragons are often shown with a mix of features from nine different animals. These include the head of a camel, deer antlers, rabbit eyes, cow ears, snake neck, clam belly, carp scales, eagle claws, and tiger paws. In many artworks, they are pictured playing with a flaming pearl, a symbol of wisdom, prosperity, or the moon.
The obverse side of the 2020 Canadian Dragon Gold Coin features Queen Elizabeth II. This design was created in 2003 by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. It shows the Queen in a right-facing portrait without a crown, a rare choice during her reign and one of the few Canadian coin designs made by a Canadian.
The reverse side shows a Chinese dragon with its body curled in the shape of the number 8. In Chinese traditions, dragons are seen as positive symbols tied to strength, power, and good fortune. They are believed to control water and weather, including rain, rivers, and storms.
