The Australian Swan series builds on the Perth Mint’s tradition of featuring native wildlife on its bullion coins. Starting with the Australian Kookaburra and Kangaroo in 1990, the series has expanded to include the Koala (2007), Wedge Tailed Eagle (2014), Emu (2018), Quokka (2020), Brumby (2020), and Wombat (2021).

Like other collections, each year’s design in the Swan series is unique. Swan family units typically consist of the mated pair and their cygnets (young swans). The parents work together to protect and raise their offspring, demonstrating a strong sense of family cohesion.

The obverse of the 2018 1 oz Gold Swan Coins features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile bust, created by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998, shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. It serves as the fourth-generation design for British and Commonwealth coins.

On the reverse, the 2018 Australian Gold Swan depicts an adult swan swimming alongside its young cygnet. The serene scene captures the cygnet, covered in down, staying close to its parent for protection and guidance. These bonds ensure the young swans are well-cared for as they grow and learn to navigate the waters.
