Historically, the 1/4 oz Gold Eagle has maintained a lower mintage compared to its counterparts, making it a distinctive and sought-after piece for collectors. In 1986, its first year of issue, the 1/4 oz coin had a mintage of only 726,031, a fraction of the 1.36 million 1 oz coins produced. Even the smaller 1/10 oz coin consistently outpaced the 1/4 oz coin.
Recent years have seen an even wider gap in mintage figures. While the 1/10 oz coin has become the top choice in the series, the 1/4 oz Gold Eagle has seen significantly lower production numbers. In 2015 and 2016, the 1/4 oz Gold Eagles had mintage figures of 158,000 and 152,000, respectively.
The obverse of the 2018 1/4 oz Gold Eagle features an adaptation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ classic Liberty image. Originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907, this updated design includes all 50 stars, creating a stunning representation of Liberty walking forward with the sun’s rays at her back.
On the reverse, Miley Busiek’s design, created in 1986 for the Gold Eagle collection, depicts an eagle flying back to the nest with an olive branch. In the nest, a group of hatchlings waits under the watchful eye of another adult eagle.
