The inaugural release in 1986 saw the highest ever mintage figure for the ½ oz Gold Eagle, with 599,566 coins sold by the US Mint. Demand dropped sharply the following year to just 131,255 coins. In the years to come, the ½ oz gold bullion coin only crossed the 100,000 coin threshold in mintage three times.
American Gold Eagle ½ oz coins wouldn’t cross 100,000 again until 1998 when 169,029 coins were produced. The second-highest all-time mintage figure for the ½ coins came in 1999 when 263,013 were struck. The third time the coins crossed 100,000 was in 2009 during the Great Recession when 110,000 coins were struck and sold.
All 2018 ½ oz American Gold Eagle coins listed here are available with plastic flips for delivery. The 2018 release experienced a modest drop from the previous year, with the mintage falling by 5,000 coins compared to 2017.
