The 2017 American Liberty Gold Coin is the first in a series of .9999 pure 24-karat gold coins released by the United States Mint to mark its 225th anniversary. This series introduces modern and diverse depictions of Liberty, starting with this bold design of Liberty as an African-American woman.

On the obverse, Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief with African-American features, a first for American coinage. She wears a crown of stars, inspired by the Statue of Freedom atop the U.S. Capitol dome. This design was created by Artistic Infusion Program Designer Justin Kunz and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.

The reverse showcases an American bald eagle in flight, a striking image that highlights the bird’s detailed feathers and sharp, watchful gaze. This design was crafted by Artistic Infusion Program Designer Chris T. Costello and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso, bringing the powerful symbol of freedom to life.

Each coin is struck in high-relief at the West Point Mint and features edge lettering reading “225th Anniversary” with stars on either side. This marks only the second time edge lettering has been used on a US coin.
