The story behind this coin goes back to its first release by the United States Mint, marking the return of a design not seen since 1933. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Lady Liberty image captures a modern, distinctly American appeal.

On the obverse of the 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle, Liberty walks forward with her torch high and the olive branch of peace in her left hand. Originally surrounded by 46 stars, it was updated to 48 stars in 1912 after the admission of New Mexico and Arizona. The 2017 edition modernizes this design further with additional stars for Alaska and Hawaii.

The reverse features a family of nesting bald eagles, created by Miley Busiek in 1986 exclusively for the American Gold Eagle series. Each 2017 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin comes with a protective plastic flip. The 2017 mintage saw a significant drop from the previous year, with demand falling from 74,000 to just 37,000 coins.
