The obverse of the 2011-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Julia Grant Gold Coin features a detailed portrait of Julia Grant. Her time as First Lady was marked by an active presence in Washington, D.C., where she worked to build relationships and played a role in strengthening political ties.

On the reverse of the 2011-W US Mint First Spouse Julia Grant Gold Coin, the design captures a moment from Julia Dent Grant’s early life. The scene shows a young Julia riding horseback on her family’s White Haven plantation in Missouri, accompanied by Ulysses S. Grant. Their relationship began in 1844 and led to their marriage in 1848, years before Grant’s rise as a Civil War general and eventual election as President of the United States.

Julia Grant’s unwavering support for her husband was evident long before his presidency. During the Civil War, while Ulysses S. Grant led the Union Army as Commanding General, she frequently moved to be near him, ensuring she remained close throughout his military campaigns.

These 2011-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Julia Grant Gold Coins are available in flawless MS70 condition, meaning they retain their full original mint luster with no visible imperfections. Each coin is also encapsulated in a slab with a label hand-signed by David Hall, a co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service.
