Van Buren sought re-election in 1840 but faced strong opposition from the Whig Party, which fielded William Henry Harrison as their candidate. The election campaign was marked by the famous “Log Cabin and Hard Cider” campaign, portraying Harrison as a man of the people. Van Buren’s association with the economic troubles of the time, combined with the popularity of Harrison, led to his defeat in the election.

As President Van Buren was a bachelor, the First Spouse Series uniquely features the famous Seated Liberty design on the obverse of the 2008-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coin. Crafted by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the US Mint, in 1836, this iconic image represents Liberty seated on a rock, holding a staff with a Phrygian cap, and with her right hand resting atop the US national shield.

On the reverse of the 2008-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coin, President Van Buren is depicted sitting beneath a tree near his family home – a notable gathering place for open political discourse during his lifetime.

These 2008-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coins at BullionMax have Mint State 70 grades. Coins with this certification have full, original mint luster and no flaws.
