Product Details

Discover the legacy of George T. Morgan, born on November 24, 1845, in Bilston, Staffordshire, England. After moving to the United States in 1876, Morgan began his engraving career at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia under Chief Engraver William Barber. While he is most renowned for the Morgan Silver Dollar, his extensive contributions are now celebrated in the 2005 5 oz Proof Gold $100 Union George T. Morgan Rounds, available at BullionMax.

Round Highlights:

  • Rounds are securely housed in NGC plastic slabs!
  • GEM Proof certification from NGC ensures top-notch quality!
  • Privately minted by the New York Mint!
  • Each round contains 5 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • The obverse features a striking depiction of a seated Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse proudly displays the majestic American bald eagle.

In 1878, Morgan clinched a design competition for the silver dollar, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. Fast forward to 2002, when a trove of Morgan’s proposed design sketches was unearthed. Among them was the captivating design of a capped bust Liberty in a seated position.

During the 19th century, the US Mint had plans for proof coins in a new $50 denomination called Half Unions. Morgan’s sketch of the capped bust, seated Liberty was intended for the $100 Union and originally produced in 1876, though it never materialized in proof or circulation. These long-lost sketches have now been brought to life on these remarkable gold rounds.

On the obverse of the 2005 5 oz Proof Gold George T. Morgan Round, witness the image of a capped Liberty seated on a rock in right-profile relief. Holding an olive branch in her left hand and a scepter in her right, with wheat stalks and a sailing vessel in the background.

Turning to the reverse design, Morgan’s other sketch for the $100 Union is beautifully struck. The American bald eagle, wings outstretched, clutches the US national shield along with three arrows and an olive branch.

Each 2005 5 oz Proof Gold $100 Union George T. Morgan Round is encapsulated in NGC slabs, boasting GEM Proof visuals, showcasing high-quality mirrored fields to contrast the design strike.
