The obverse of the 2001 1/4 oz Chinese Gold Panda shows a Giant Panda walking through a bamboo forest. These pandas have a highly routine lifestyle focused on eating. Each day, they spend around 12 to 16 hours chewing on bamboo, consuming between 26 and 84 pounds of it as their main source of food.

On the reverse, you’ll find an image of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This historic building is part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The design has remained a constant in the series since 1982. It depicts the hall viewed from the front staircase, looking up at the main entry doors.

Outside of their feeding time, pandas usually rest for a few hours, often reclining against rocks or trees in a laid-back position. They also spend brief periods playing, grooming, or exploring their surroundings. Pandas are most active at dawn and dusk, searching the forest for fresh bamboo shoots.
