The Chinese Gold Panda Series was first introduced in 1982 and has been a key part of the gold bullion market ever since. Originally offered in four weights—1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz—the series added a 1/20 oz option in 1983. One of the series’ most recognizable features is its changing Giant Panda design, which appears on the reverse of each new release. Right now, BullionMax has the 2000 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin available to purchase.
Coin Highlights:
Efforts to protect the Giant Panda have centered on preserving bamboo forests and creating wildlife corridors to connect separated panda groups. These steps help ensure the animals can find food and interact with others. The panda’s bamboo-based diet, despite its carnivorous anatomy, is a unique case of how animals adapt to fill specific roles in their ecosystems.
Each 2000 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin is housed in a sealed plastic pouch. Only 20,811 coins were minted, making it one of the lower mintage releases in the series. This release is also notable as the last to feature the original face values before changes were introduced in 2001.
The obverse side of the coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a key building located in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, emperors would visit this site to pray for good harvests. The design highlights the building’s stairway and its three-tiered roof.
On the reverse of the coin, you’ll find a Giant Panda resting against a rock, with bamboo in the background. Even though pandas are built like meat-eaters, they mostly eat bamboo. To make up for their limited ability to digest it, they spend much of their day eating—often between 20 to 40 pounds daily.
