Introduced in 1982, the Chinese Gold Panda Series is one of the longest-running gold bullion programs in the world. When these coins first appeared, there were only a couple of major gold bullion options—namely, the South African Krugerrand and Canadian Maple Leaf. Since its launch, the 1 oz Gold Panda has remained a central part of the series, with each year showcasing a new image of the beloved Giant Panda. Right now, BullionMax has 1989 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins available for purchase.
Coin Highlights:
Giant pandas spend the majority of their waking hours eating—roughly 10 to 16 hours a day. Bamboo makes up nearly their entire diet, and thanks to a special wrist bone that functions like a thumb, they can hold and handle bamboo stalks with surprising skill. On average, an adult panda eats between 20 and 40 pounds of bamboo each day.
These 1989 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins come packaged in sealed plastic pouches from the mint. Each one is marked with what’s known as the Small Date engraving, which means the date numbers are more compact and appear closer together than on other varieties.
The obverse of the 1989 Gold Panda Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This round building, with its distinct layered roof, is found at the center of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing—a site of religious and cultural significance in Taoist tradition.
On the reverse side of the 1989 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda, you’ll find a Giant Panda enjoying a meal of bamboo. Pandas are mostly solitary animals and tend to avoid one another except during mating season. While they are best known for their frequent feeding habits, they also rest a great deal throughout the day. Their peak activity usually occurs at dawn and dusk.
