The Gold Britannia series was introduced by the Royal Mint in 1987 and has become one of the most recognized bullion coin programs from the United Kingdom. These coins continue a long-standing British coinage tradition while offering investors a trusted gold option. Although modern issues (2013-present) are struck in .9999 pure gold, earlier releases such as this 1989 coin were produced in 22-karat gold. Today, the 1989 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coin is available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1989 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coin is delivered in a plastic flip for protection. While today’s Gold Britannias are struck in 24-karat gold, the early coins in the series were minted in 22-karat gold. This coin contains 91.67% gold, with copper making up the remaining alloy. Notably, 1989 was the final year in which copper was used as the balancing metal. From 1990 through 2012, silver replaced copper in the alloy composition.
As official legal tender in the United Kingdom, Gold Britannias carry a face value and are backed by the British government. For UK residents, these coins may also offer certain tax benefits, including exemption from Capital Gains Tax. Over time, the Britannia series has earned global recognition for its gold content, security features, and classic design, making it a popular choice among investors seeking government-issued bullion coins.
The obverse of the 1989 British Gold Britannia features the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Raphael Maklouf. This effigy was used on British coinage from 1985 to 1997 and shows Her Majesty wearing the Royal Diadem. Surrounding inscriptions note the denomination, year of issue, and metal content, providing a clean and balanced presentation.
On the reverse, the coin displays the well-known image of Britannia designed by Philip Nathan. She is shown standing in classical attire, holding a trident and shield as she faces the wind. This design reflects Britain’s maritime history and national identity, with fine details that highlight the Royal Mint’s craftsmanship.
