The 1987 5 oz Proof Gold Panda was the first release of its kind from the Chinese Mint in this weight. With a reported mintage of just 3,000 pieces, it marked a notable entry in the Proof Gold Panda series. No additional 5 oz proof coins were issued for several years after, and many of the surviving coins have received high certification grades. Today, BullionMax offers 1987 5 oz Proof Chinese Gold Panda Coins graded PF69 by the NGC.
Coin Highlights:
In the wild, panda cubs depend on their mothers not just for food and warmth, but for learning essential life skills. Researchers have observed how cubs use unique cries to signal hunger, and how mother pandas respond with calming sounds while tending to their young. These early interactions play an important role in building the strong bond between the two.
Each 1987 5 oz Proof Chinese Gold Panda Coin available here has been graded PF69, indicating nearly flawless condition. Coins at this grade level display full original luster with no more than two small imperfections, typically in the form of faint marks or hairlines away from the main design. These are also UCAM, or ultra-cameo, specimens featuring sharp frosted visuals set against mirror-like backgrounds.
The obverse of the 1987 Gold Panda shows a tender scene between a mother panda and her cub on a rock. As young pandas grow, they rely on their mothers to model survival skills, such as foraging for bamboo, learning to climb safely, and becoming aware of their surroundings through daily observation and imitation.
On the reverse side is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, located in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The interior design of the hall includes 28 columns, each with symbolic meaning: four central columns for the seasons, twelve middle columns for the months, and twelve outer columns representing the hours in a traditional Chinese day. These elements reflect the hall’s deeper role in aligning spiritual rituals with cosmic order.
