In 1983, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was in its fifth year of production. That year marked the first full run with .9999 gold for the 1 oz coin and the first full year that fractional sizes were offered. Right now, 1983 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1983 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin offered here ships in a simple plastic flip to protect the surface during handling. The 1/10 oz option debuted in 1982; for 1983, overall output for this size increased by nearly 60,000 pieces versus the first-year issue.
The maple leaf has been linked with Canada since at least the 1700s, when French Canadians used it as an emblem. Its national role grew through the 19th century, and the symbol became even more familiar during the First World War and through its recurring use on Canadian coinage.
The obverse of 1983 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins shows Queen Elizabeth II. This is the second official portrait of the Queen, created in 1964 by Arnold Machin. Adopted by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979 with the launch of the Gold Maple Leaf, this right-facing profile of the 39-year-old monarch appeared on the series until 1989.
On the reverse, each 1983 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf presents Walter Ott’s sugar maple leaf. Introduced in 1979, this clean, single-leaf motif has remained the central image across Maple Leaf bullion in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, making it one of the most recognizable designs in modern bullion.
