The 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar Gold Coin showcases Adolph A. Weinman’s original artwork from 1916. On the obverse, Liberty walks confidently toward the rising sun with the American flag draped across her shoulders while carrying branches of laurel and oak in her arms. The reverse displays a young bald eagle standing on a rocky perch with its wings beginning to open, creating a natural and detailed image that reflects strength and readiness.

The accompanying Silver Medal features a modern version of the famous Walking Liberty design. On the obverse, Liberty appears in left-profile as she strides toward the rising sun. The reverse shows an American bald eagle flying above the landscape with the morning sun rising behind it, offering a fresh interpretation of the classic design.

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was introduced during the nationwide effort to improve the artistic quality of American coinage that began under President Theodore Roosevelt and continued through the following administrations. In 1915, sculptor Adolph A. Weinman was selected by the Treasury Department to create new designs for both the dime and half dollar, replacing the long-running Barber coinage with artwork that reflected the nation’s growing appreciation for exceptional coin design.
