The Standing Liberty Quarter debuted in 1916 during a remarkable period of change in American coinage that also introduced the Lincoln Cent, Buffalo Nickel, Mercury Dime, and Walking Liberty Half Dollar. As part of the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the United States Mint launched its Best of the Mint Series to honor five of the most celebrated coin designs in the nation’s history. Today, 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter Gold Coin and Silver Medal Sets are available from BullionMax.
Product Highlights:
When the Standing Liberty Quarter replaced the Barber Quarter in 1916, it introduced a fresh artistic vision for American circulating coinage. Its detailed classical imagery and full-length depiction of Liberty gave the design a distinctive appearance that stood apart from earlier US coins. The combination of graceful artwork and symbolic themes has helped make the Standing Liberty Quarter one of the most admired coin designs ever produced by the United States Mint.
Each 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set includes both pieces housed in protective individual capsules. The set is packaged in a presentation box with a themed outer shipper and includes an official Certificate of Authenticity from the United States Mint. This release marks the second installment in the Mint’s Best of the Mint Series, following the Mercury Dime. Future releases in the series will showcase the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the 1804 Silver Dollar, and the 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief Gold Coin.
The 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter Gold Coin showcases Hermon Atkins MacNeil’s original design. On the obverse, Liberty steps forward through a gateway while carrying a shield in her raised right hand and an olive branch in her left. Her flowing robes and protective chain mail create an image of strength and readiness unlike the profile portraits found on earlier American coins. The reverse features a soaring American eagle with outstretched wings flying across the field, offering a more energetic and natural presentation than the eagle seen on the Barber Quarter.
The accompanying silver medal presents a contemporary interpretation of the classic Standing Liberty design. The obverse shows Liberty holding a shield decorated with 50 rivets around its border and 13 stripes representing the nation throughout its history. She extends an olive branch toward an approaching eagle, while the reverse displays a close-up image of the eagle’s talons grasping that same olive branch after accepting Liberty’s offering.
