The Mercury Dime first appeared in 1916 during a period of major change in American coin design that also introduced the Lincoln Cent, Buffalo Nickel, and Walking Liberty Half Dollar. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary in 2026, the United States Mint has introduced the Best of the Mint Series, a collection honoring some of the most recognizable coin designs in American history. Today, BullionMax offers the 1916 Mercury Dime Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set.
Product Highlights:
Each 1916 Mercury Dime Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set comes with both pieces individually sealed in protective capsules. The coin and medal are packaged together in an attractive presentation box that includes a themed outer shipper and a Certificate of Authenticity from the United States Mint. This release serves as the opening issue in the Best of the Mint Series. Future releases in the collection will celebrate the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, 1804 Silver Dollar, and the 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief Liberty Gold Coin.
This marks the second modern release inspired by the classic Mercury Dime. In 2016, the United States Mint honored the 100th anniversary of the 1916 coin redesigns with special 24-karat gold versions of the Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, and Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Those same historic designs are featured in the Best of the Mint Series, with each gold coin struck in a weight that reflects its original denomination: 1/10 oz for the dime, 1/4 oz for the quarter, and 1/2 oz for the half dollar.
On the obverse of the 1916 Mercury Dime Gold Coin is Adolph A. Weinman’s famous depiction of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. The wings led many Americans to associate the image with Mercury, the Roman messenger god, giving the coin its enduring nickname despite Liberty being the actual figure shown.
The reverse of the Mercury Dime Gold Coin displays a fasces, an ancient Roman symbol consisting of rods bound around an axe. The design represents strength through unity and lawful authority, while the olive branch crossing the fasces serves as a symbol of peace.
The Silver Medal in this set features artwork that extends across both sides of the medal to tell the story of America from 1916 through 1945. Liberty is portrayed in a way that reflects both strength and determination during a period marked by two World Wars, while the reverse includes imagery inspired by Hooverville settlements, the Dust Bowl, and the hardships of the Great Depression.
