The Mercury Dime came about through President Theodore Roosevelt’s effort to improve the artistic quality of American coinage. After overseeing redesigns of the nation’s gold coins, attention shifted to silver denominations that Americans used every day. In 1915, the United States Mint selected sculptor Adolph A. Weinman to create new designs for both the dime and the half dollar.

On the obverse of the Mercury Dime Gold Coin is Weinman’s famous portrait of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. The resemblance of the cap to the headwear often associated with the Roman god Mercury led collectors and the public to nickname the coin the Mercury Dime. Though the name has endured for more than a century, the portrait actually depicts Liberty.

On the reverse of the Mercury Dime Gold Coin is the classic fasces design. The fasces, an ancient Roman symbol made up of rods bound around an axe, represents strength through unity and lawful authority. An olive branch is included alongside it as a symbol of peace.

The Silver Medal included in this set features a design that flows continuously from the obverse to the reverse. The artwork reflects the challenges and defining events experienced by the United States between 1916 and 1945. Liberty is shown with both defensive and offensive qualities, symbolizing the nation’s role in two World Wars. The reverse incorporates imagery tied to major hardships of the era, including Hoovervilles, the Dust Bowl, and the Great Depression.
