The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle remains one of the most respected coins from the Pre-33 era of American gold. Known for its detailed artwork and nearly full ounce of gold content, this series continues to attract collectors and investors looking for historic US coinage. Today, 1911-S Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins certified by the PCGS are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
These 1911-S Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with an MS65 grade are known for their attractive overall appearance and solid mint luster. Examples at this grade may have a few light contact marks scattered across the surface, but major focal points generally remain free from noticeable distractions.
On the obverse of the 1911-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coin is the famous Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty strides forward, holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Behind her are the US Capitol building and rays of sunlight, creating one of the most recognizable designs ever used on American coinage.
The reverse of the 1911-S Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle features an American bald eagle flying above the sun. The eagle’s wings stretch across the design while sunbeams rise upward in the background. This image has long been appreciated for its detailed appearance and strong national symbolism.
The San Francisco Mint struck 775,750 examples of the 1911-S Double Eagle. This issue is considered one of the scarcer coins from the middle years of the series and is often valued for the strong strike quality associated with San Francisco Mint production. The 1911 issue was also the final year featuring 46 stars on the obverse. In 1912, the addition of Arizona and New Mexico to the Union increased the total to 48 stars.
