The 1908 No Motto Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle holds a special place in the history of American gold coinage. As one of the first 1908 issues struck without the IN GOD WE TRUST motto, it reflects President Theodore Roosevelt’s original vision for the series before Congress required the inscription to return later that same year. These early No Motto examples remain a favorite among collectors and offer an interesting chapter in the story of the iconic Saint-Gaudens design. Right now, certified 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin offered here is a No Motto example, meaning it does not feature the IN GOD WE TRUST inscription that was added to later 1908 releases. Certified Mint State 63 by PCGS, these coins display reduced original mint luster along with numerous small contact marks, and heavier marks may also be visible.
The 1908 No Motto Double Eagle was produced at both the Philadelphia Mint and the Denver Mint. Philadelphia struck 4,271,551 coins, making it one of the more readily available early dates in the Saint-Gaudens series, while Denver produced 663,750 examples, creating a noticeably lower-mintage issue that has long drawn added attention from collectors. Both mints struck these coins during the brief period between the design’s 1907 debut and the restoration of the national motto later in 1908.
On the obverse of the 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ celebrated image of Liberty walking confidently forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The U.S. Capitol appears behind her, while rays of the rising sun spread across the background to complete one of the most admired designs in American coinage.
The reverse of the 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle showcases a powerful American bald eagle flying above the rising sun. Rather than using the traditional heraldic style found on earlier United States gold coins, Saint-Gaudens created a more lifelike portrayal that captures the eagle in motion, giving the design a sense of energy and realism that continues to stand out today.
