One of the most famous coins in American history is the $20 Gold Double Eagle. Introduced by the United States Mint in 1907, this coin features a groundbreaking vision of Lady Liberty on its obverse. Among the unique issues in this series, the 1907 and early 1908 coins without the US national motto are highly prized by collectors. Right now, 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in certified condition from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins available here is certified Mint State 63. Coins in this condition show slight impairments to their mint luster, such as small contact marks, a few scattered heavier marks, and faint hairlines that might be visible without magnification.
Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty on the $20 Gold Double Eagle is considered one of the most beautiful designs in American coinage history. In this design, Liberty strides forward confidently, her hair and gown flowing in the breeze. She holds a torch in her right hand, symbolizing enlightenment, and an olive branch in her left hand, representing peace. The design’s energy and motion set it apart as a masterpiece of early 20th-century coinage.
On the obverse of the 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, Lady Liberty appears in front-facing relief with rays of sunlight behind her. A ring of 46 stars surrounds her figure, reflecting the number of states in the Union in 1908. The design also includes a small depiction of the U.S. Capitol Building.
The reverse side of the 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle features the American bald eagle. This soaring eagle is shown in left-profile relief, gliding above a rising sun with its rays extending across the design. These “No Motto” coins lack the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST,” which was added to later versions of the coin in 1908.
