The US Mint introduced the $20 Double Eagle in 1849 after the California Gold Rush brought in a significant amount of gold. It was the last addition to the Eagle Series, a group of gold coins first issued in 1795. The Double Eagle circulated from 1850 until 1933, with the Liberty design used for most of those years. Right now, BullionMax offers 1903-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins for purchase.
Coin Highlights:
Before the release of the Double Eagle, the US Mint’s gold coins included the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and $2.50 Quarter Eagle. These coins were used in everyday commerce, but the Double Eagle found a different use. It became a popular choice for larger transactions between banks and for international trade during its years in circulation.
Each 1903-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle available here has been certified MS64+ by the PCGS. Coins with this grade are known for having strong eye appeal, good luster, and only a few noticeable contact marks or hairlines.
The obverse of the 1903-S Liberty Double Eagle displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, it was based on an earlier design by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty wears a coronet crown and is surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies.
On the reverse, the coin features the Type III version of the Great Seal of the United States. First used on the coin in 1877, this design includes 13 stars above the seal and inscriptions of both “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the denomination “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
